Thinking about changing the appearance of your nose? It’s a big decision, and the more you understand your options, the easier it is to feel confident about your next step. The two most common approaches are liquid rhinoplasty and a surgical nose job. Both can help refine the look of your nose, but they differ in terms of results, recovery, commitment, and cost.

To help break it down, we spoke with [Dr. Ashlin Alexander](https://healthoneskinclinic.ca/dr-ashlin-alexander/), who is focused on Facial Cosmetic Surgery at HealthOne Skin Clinic. He is registered with the CPSO specializing in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.

### **Quick Answer: What Is The Main Difference Between Liquid Rhinoplasty & Surgical Nose Job**

The right choice depends on what you want to change. Liquid rhinoplasty uses dermal filler to make small, cosmetic adjustments. It’s great for hiding a small bump, lifting a droopy tip on the side profile; or for augmenting a flat nasal bridge for better refinement, or correcting minor asymmetries. It’s temporary, non-surgical, with very minimal downtime and recovery. Surgical rhinoplasty is more involved, but it can create permanent structural changes, including refining the bridge, changing the size or shape of the nose, or addressing breathing concerns—surgery can accomplish things that liquid rhinoplasty simply cannot. Once you’re clear on what you’re hoping to improve, it becomes much easier to decide which option makes the most sense for you.

## **What Is Liquid Rhinoplasty?**

A liquid rhinoplasty is a non-surgical treatment that uses dermal filler to subtly change the appearance of the nose. It’s strictly cosmetic, which means it can help improve the way the nose looks, but it can’t correct structural concerns or breathing issues. Those changes require surgery.

Liquid rhinoplasty may be a good option if you want to improve:

- A nasal tip that looks droopy or under-projected
- A bump on the bridge of the nose, also known as a dorsal hump
- Minor asymmetry when viewed from the front

What happens during a liquid rhinoplasty

During the treatment, your provider carefully injects small amounts of hyaluronic acid-based filler into specific areas of the nose. For example, filler may be used to soften the look of a bump, create the illusion of a straighter bridge, or add subtle support to the tip for a slightly more lifted appearance.

How long a liquid rhinoplasty lasts

“The results of a liquid rhinoplasty procedure typically last for 9-12 months, with some cases lasting up to 18 months. The body naturally breaks down the hyaluronic acid-based filler, which means the results aren’t permanent, and they are reversible,” says Dr. Alexander.

Many people like the temporary nature of this treatment because it offers flexibility:

- **It can last longer than filler in more mobile areas.** Because the nose does not move as much as areas like the lips or cheeks, filler in this area may last longer for some patients.
- **It isn’t permanent.** If your goals change or you decide the look is not for you, the results naturally fade over time.
- **It can feel like a “test drive.”** If you’re curious about rhinoplasty but not ready for surgery, filler can give you a sense of what a change may look like.

## **What Is Surgical Rhinoplasty?**

Surgical rhinoplasty, often called a nose job, is used to change both the appearance and structure of the nose. Because it involves surgery, it can address concerns that filler cannot, including the size, shape, and function of the nose.

Surgical rhinoplasty may be a better fit if you:

- Want to change the nasal bridge, tip, nostrils, or overall shape of the nose
- Have structural concerns, such as a deviated septum or breathing issues
- Are looking for more noticeable changes that can’t be achieved with injectable filler, such as narrowing the nose or physically making the nose smaller

What happens during surgical rhinoplasty

There are two main surgical approaches: open and closed rhinoplasty. With open rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes a small incision at the base of the nose. With closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nostrils, so there is no external incision.

“I recommend the best type of procedure depending on the patient’s anatomy and their goals,” Dr. Alexander explains. “I’m experienced in both techniques, and truly love to perform rhinoplasty surgery.”

The surgery usually takes about three to four hours. After the procedure, your surgeon will provide aftercare instructions to support proper healing, and follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your progress.

How long a surgical rhinoplasty lasts

“Because it’s a surgical procedure, traditional rhinoplasty results are permanent,” Dr. Alexander explains. “For most patients, the majority of healing takes place in the first 1-2 months. However, swelling will continue to subside, and the tissues will continue to heal for up to a year.”

## **Comparison Table: Choosing Your Path**

Here’s a side-by-side look at the main differences between liquid rhinoplasty and a surgical nose job.

| Factor | Surgical nose job | Liquid rhinoplasty |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Best for | More noticeable or structural changes, including reshaping the bridge, tip, nostrils, or overall size of the nose. | Small cosmetic refinements, such as smoothing a bump, lifting the tip, or improving minor asymmetry. |
| What it can’t do | Can’t guarantee a specific “perfect” result; the goal is overall enhancement and improvement. | Can’t make the nose smaller, narrow the nostrils, or correct breathing or structural concerns. |
| Longevity | Permanent. | Typically lasts 9–12 months, with some cases lasting up to 18 months. |
| Reversibility | Not easily reversible; changes usually require revision surgery. | Often adjustable or dissolvable when hyaluronic acid filler is used. |
| Product or technique used | Surgical reshaping of bone, cartilage, and nasal tissue. | Hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler. |
| Procedure time | Usually about 3–4 hours. | Often about 15–30 minutes. |
| Recovery and results | Visible swelling and bruising are most noticeable in the first few weeks, but final refinement can take up to a year. | Little to no downtime for many patients; mild swelling or bruising may settle over several days to about a week. |
| Breathing concerns | Able to address breathing or functional concerns, depending on the patient’s anatomy and treatment plan. | Does not correct breathing concerns or internal nasal structure. |
| Cost | Varies by treatment plan and should be confirmed during consultation. | $1,750 + HST. |

### Frequently Asked Questions

1\. How do I choose between liquid rhinoplasty and surgical rhinoplasty?

The decision comes down to your cosmetic goals and budget. Liquid rhinoplasty can correct small asymmetries and add volume to different areas of the nose. It’s really good at camouflaging a dorsal hump and a droopy tip on the side profile. However, it cannot correct structural issues or make the nose smaller or narrower. For more significant changes, a surgical rhinoplasty is typically recommended. The second deciding factor is cost. At HealthOne Skin Clinic The Well, a non-surgical rhinoplasty is $1750 + HST and surgical rhinoplasty is a higher price point based on the patient’s unique needs.

2\. Can liquid rhinoplasty make my nose smaller?

No. Liquid rhinoplasty can’t physically reduce the size or width of the nose. Because it uses dermal filler, it can effectively add volume and smooth out contours. If you want to significantly change the shape and structure of your nose, you may require surgical rhinoplasty instead.

3\. Can liquid rhinoplasty fix a deviated septum or breathing problems?

No. Liquid rhinoplasty is a purely cosmetic procedure, so it doesn’t correct internal structural problems or improve nasal airflow. Based on the person’s anatomy, surgical rhinoplasty may be able to fix a deviated septum or breathing problems.

4\. Can I get surgical rhinoplasty after having liquid rhinoplasty or nose filler?

Yes, you can typically still get surgical rhinoplasty if you have previously had nose filler. Depending on the type, amount and placement of filler, your surgeon may suggest allowing it to dissolve naturally or dissolving it before or during surgery. Your provider will review your medical history and determine the best approach based on your previous treatments.

5\. Which option is better for a bump on the nose: filler or surgical rhinoplasty?

Both treatments can improve the appearance of a bump on the nose, but they work differently. Liquid rhinoplasty may place filler above or around the dorsal hump to create the illusion of a straighter, smoother profile. It does not physically remove the bump. Surgical rhinoplasty, on the other hand, can reshape or reduce the actual bone and cartilage. Your surgeon can outline which option would be the safest and most effective option for you.

6\. Can I use liquid rhinoplasty as a temporary test before having surgery?

Liquid rhinoplasty can help some patients visualize cosmetic changes before committing to surgery. However, dermal filler can’t accurately produce every result that surgical rhinoplasty can achieve – especially with nose narrowing, reduction, or structural changes. It’s important to discuss any previous filler procedures with your surgeon when planning a surgical rhinoplasty.

7\. Can liquid rhinoplasty be reversed if I do not like the results?

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are not permanent. A qualified healthcare professional can use a product called hyaluronidase to dissolve it. However, filler can also break down naturally in the body, and your provider may recommend either option based on your unique case. It is much easier to reverse the results of a liquid rhinoplasty compared to a surgical.
