Thinking about microneedling? You’re in the right place. In this blog post, we’ll break down everything you need to know about microneedling aftercare from Monique Poirier, our Senior Medical Aesthetician at HealthOne Skin Clinic.

Over the years, we’ve performed microneedling for countless patients and shared these aftercare tips with a high success rate. Everything we cover here comes directly from our hands-on experience working with individuals who have trusted us for their microneedling treatments.

At HealthOne Skin Clinic, our nurses and aestheticians offer some of the best microneedling in Toronto. Whether you have aging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, or acne scars, this non-invasive beauty procedure can help you reveal healthier, better skin. But remember: microneedling aftercare is just as important as the procedure itself! Are you ready to get your glow on?

Why HealthOne Microneedling Stands Out

Microneedling is a popular aesthetic procedure that uses tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. “It stimulates collagen, which essentially triggers the healing process in the skin,” Monique explains.

It’s great for fine lines, acne scars, and signs of aging. Because of these incredible benefits, microneedling has grown in popularity and is offered at thousands of aesthetic clinics around the world.

But what comes with popularity is the desire for shortcuts and DIYs. Once people realized how beneficial microneedling was, they wanted to do it at home to save time and money. If you look up #microneedling on Instagram or TikTok, you’ll see thousands of people doing it professionally and at home. It’s important to understand the difference so you can make an informed decision for your skin.

Microneedling Aftercare

Before you get microneedling, it's important to understand microneedling aftercare. If you’re going to invest in your skin, you have to adhere to the post-care instructions. Here’s what Monique, our Senior Medical Aesthetician, recommends:

  • Sunscreen. This is non-negotiable. Make sure you apply SPF 30-50 every 2-3 hours.

  • Don’t expose your skin to the sun.

  • Don’t touch or pick your skin.

  • Don’t use active ingredients (like retinol or acids) for at least 5 days.

  • Use lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser morning and night.

  • Use a clean pillowcase and face towels to keep your skin clean.

  • No working out, sweating, or saunas for 2 days.

  • No makeup for at least 2 days.

  • Apply a simple, fragrance-free moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol or smoking for a few days after your treatment.

  • Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.

What Happens During an Appointment?

“First, I cleanse the skin and de-grease it with alcohol,” Monique explains. “Next, I apply topical numbing cream. If I’m going deep, I prefer to numb for an hour. If it’s a lighter treatment, 30 minutes is fine.

Once numb, I remove the cream, degrease again with alcohol, and apply hyaluronic acid usually SkinCeuticals B5. It’s a hydrating serum that allows the pen to glide.

Then, I start microneedling. The great thing about this treatment is that I can customize the depth and speed based on the client’s skin and skin condition. For example, if someone has deep acne scars, I might use faster, more aggressive settings. Once I’m done, I clean the skin again and go through the microneedling aftercare instructions.”

We recommend scheduling your microneedling appointment during a time when you don’t have any in-person commitments for the next few days. This will allow you to stay out of the sun and give your skin the time it needs to heal.

What Should Someone Expect on Days 1, 3, and 5?

  • Day 1: Skin will feel like you have a mild sunburn. A little warm, may appear pink or red.

  • Day 3: Results vary person by person. You may still have some pink or redness, or experience peeling or sloughing.

  • Day 5: Your skin should look fully healed, although it’s still doing work internally. You’ll start to notice that post-microneedling glow.

Keep in mind, these results will vary from person to person, as well as the concerns you’re getting microneedling for.

“If you do microneedling on Friday, by Monday, you’d be able to go back to work,” Monique shares. But collagen takes three months to rebuild, so the deeper results will come later. “That’s why I tell people: even when you look healed, you’re still healing internally.”

How Often Can You Get Microneedling?

For best results, Monique recommends at least three sessions, spaced four weeks apart. For acne scars, deep wrinkles, and older skin, the more sessions, the better. At HealthOne Skin Clinic, we offer discounts on microneedling packages.  We’d love to chat with you and help you plan out a treatment plan for your skin goals.
