Dreaming of softer, smoother skin? Microneedling might be the answer! It’s a popular aesthetic treatment that can help your skin look (and feel) its best.

While we’ve already covered the basics of microneedling, what aftercare looks like, and why you shouldn’t do microneedling at home,  there’s still lots to explore about microneedling benefits. In this blog, we sit down with Desirée Dacres, our Cosmetic Nurse Specialist at HealthOne Skin Clinic, The Well, to learn the full scoop.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is an aesthetic procedure used to stimulate collagen and elastin. “The main premise is to create micro-injuries in the skin, which triggers your body’s natural wound healing process,” Desirée explains.

When you get professional microneedling, the provider will use a clean, sterile device with tiny needles on the end of it. They’ll apply hyaluronic acid or platelet-rich plasma (Desirée’s favourite!) to your skin and glide the pen over it, creating hundreds of tiny micro-channels on its surface.

Here’s a quick rundown of these two forms of microneedling and their benefits:

Microneedling With Hyaluronic Acid

Most clinics offer microneedling with hyaluronic acid. “Hyaluronic acid is “hydrophilic,” meaning water-loving. This molecule holds and retains 1000x its weight in water! Desirée says. “It hydrates and plumps the skin, but the results are often temporary and surface-level.”

Platelet-rich plasma, also known as PRP, is what Desirée refers to as ‘liquid gold’. “It’s your body’s own natural anti-aging serum,” she explains.

PRP is obtained by drawing a small amount of your blood and spinning it in a centrifuge. This separates the blood into layers and allows the nurse to extract the nutrient-rich plasma.

“PRP contains growth factors that simulate wound healing, collagen production, and long-term rejuvenation. In my opinion, microneedling with PRP creates much better results. It’s completely natural and incredibly powerful.”

Whether you decide to get microneedling with hyaluronic acid or microneedling with PRP, you can look forward to some impressive benefits.

Microneedling Benefits

Now that we’ve covered the basics of microneedling, let’s explore the benefits of this amazing treatment.

Improves Skin Concerns

The great thing about microneedling is that it treats many different things at once! By triggering your body’s natural wound healing process, it improves skin concerns such as:

  • Acne scars

  • Surgical or traumatic scars

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Pigmentation

  • General anti-aging

  • Skin texture

Visibly Radiant Skin

Desirée shares that another benefit of microneedling is visibly radiant skin. “You’ll notice a glow right away, especially if you’re getting microneedling with PRP,” Desirée says. “That’s why it’s popular – because it gives that instant post-treatment radiance.”

However, truly visible results typically occur after 3 sessions. This is when most patients see significant improvements in their skin texture, scars, and overall tone.

Healthier Skin

Last but not least, microneedling is an excellent way to improve your skin's health for years to come. “It's a great treatment for long-term anti-aging and maintaining your skin health.”

Desirée recommends spacing sessions 4-6 weeks apart, depending on the condition being treated. Most patients do a series of 3-6 treatments, followed by quarterly maintenance.

“At the end of the day, microneedling with PRP is the most natural treatment you can do,” she says. “You’re using your own body’s regenerative power – your own liquid gold – to heal and rejuvenate your skin.”
