“Canada's healthcare system is facing unprecedented pressures, and this partnership marks a critical step forward," said Dr. Dhanjit Litt, Chief Medical and Wellness Officer at HealthOne. "Embedding residents in an integrated care environment will help them become more well-rounded physicians. They’re exposed to the full spectrum of care, from mental health to wellness to rehabilitation, which broadens their understanding of whole-person health."

This approach aligns with TMU’s goal of delivering community-based training in innovative clinical settings.

“We are proud to partner with HealthOne as part of TMU’s new Family Medicine Residency Program," said Jobin Varughese, Interim Assistant Dean, Primary Care Education, TMU School of Medicine. “Our goal is to provide Family Medicine Residents with diverse, community-based training environments, and HealthOne’s integrated model makes it an ideal site. We look forward to continuing to expand the number of learners who will gain experience here in the years ahead."

Building on that approach, HealthOne’s residency program gives learners hands-on experience within a truly integrated model of care. Residents observe, shadow, and participate in supervised clinical services, working alongside HealthOne’s family physicians and other practitioners across departments. By combining family medicine with dental, rehab, optometry, mental health, wellness, and pharmacy, HealthOne gives residents a rare chance to see how collaboration improves patient outcomes.

“HealthOne provides a unique opportunity to experience medicine beyond the standard model,” said Michael Johnson, Family Medicine Resident, TMU School of Medicine. “Learning within such an integrated setting has already helped me develop a broader understanding of patient care and will continue to shape how I approach medicine throughout my career.”

Dr. Litt adds that this kind of immersive, multidisciplinary learning benefits not only residents but also strengthens the healthcare system as a whole. “What makes this program so meaningful is its long-term impact,” he explained. “By training future physicians in a collaborative environment, we’re not only improving their education but also strengthening how healthcare is delivered in our communities.”

Patients experience these benefits firsthand through care that connects their physical, mental, and preventative health. This model embodies HealthOne’s pillars of unification, innovation, and community, reinforcing its dedication to advancing healthcare through education, integration, and compassion.
