The right choice depends on what you want to change. Liquid rhinoplasty uses dermal filler to make small, cosmetic adjustments. It’s great for hiding a small bump, lifting a droopy tip on the side profile; or for augmenting a flat nasal bridge for better refinement, or correcting minor asymmetries. It’s temporary, non-surgical, with very minimal downtime and recovery. Surgical rhinoplasty is more involved, but it can create permanent structural changes, including refining the bridge, changing the size or shape of the nose, or addressing breathing concerns—surgery can accomplish things that liquid rhinoplasty simply cannot. Once you’re clear on what you’re hoping to improve, it becomes much easier to decide which option makes the most sense for you.
A liquid rhinoplasty is a non-surgical treatment that uses dermal filler to subtly change the appearance of the nose. It’s strictly cosmetic, which means it can help improve the way the nose looks, but it can’t correct structural concerns or breathing issues. Those changes require surgery.
Liquid rhinoplasty may be a good option if you want to improve:
A nasal tip that looks droopy or under-projected
A bump on the bridge of the nose, also known as a dorsal hump
Minor asymmetry when viewed from the front
What happens during a liquid rhinoplasty
During the treatment, your provider carefully injects small amounts of hyaluronic acid-based filler into specific areas of the nose. For example, filler may be used to soften the look of a bump, create the illusion of a straighter bridge, or add subtle support to the tip for a slightly more lifted appearance.
How long a liquid rhinoplasty lasts
“The results of a liquid rhinoplasty procedure typically last for 9-12 months, with some cases lasting up to 18 months. The body naturally breaks down the hyaluronic acid-based filler, which means the results aren’t permanent, and they are reversible,” says Dr. Alexander.
Many people like the temporary nature of this treatment because it offers flexibility:
It can last longer than filler in more mobile areas. Because the nose does not move as much as areas like the lips or cheeks, filler in this area may last longer for some patients.
It isn’t permanent. If your goals change or you decide the look is not for you, the results naturally fade over time.
It can feel like a “test drive.” If you’re curious about rhinoplasty but not ready for surgery, filler can give you a sense of what a change may look like.
Surgical rhinoplasty, often called a nose job, is used to change both the appearance and structure of the nose. Because it involves surgery, it can address concerns that filler cannot, including the size, shape, and function of the nose.
Surgical rhinoplasty may be a better fit if you:
Want to change the nasal bridge, tip, nostrils, or overall shape of the nose
Have structural concerns, such as a deviated septum or breathing issues
Are looking for more noticeable changes that can’t be achieved with injectable filler, such as narrowing the nose or physically making the nose smaller
What happens during surgical rhinoplasty
There are two main surgical approaches: open and closed rhinoplasty. With open rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes a small incision at the base of the nose. With closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nostrils, so there is no external incision.

The surgery usually takes about three to four hours. After the procedure, your surgeon will provide aftercare instructions to support proper healing, and follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your progress.
How long a surgical rhinoplasty lasts
“Because it’s a surgical procedure, traditional rhinoplasty results are permanent,” Dr. Alexander explains. “For most patients, the majority of healing takes place in the first 1-2 months. However, swelling will continue to subside, and the tissues will continue to heal for up to a year.”
