We all have active lives. With that comes aches and pains. Distinguishing those from more serious physical issues, that are potentially more debilitating, is another thing entirely.

That’s where a chiropractor comes in. You go see a chiropractor for acute injuries or issues that are chronic.

What is a Chiropractor?

Chiropractors are members of a regulated healthcare profession, overseen by the College of Chiropractors of Ontario, the governing body for the profession in the province.  They’re qualified to assess, diagnose and treat certain issues affecting the musculoskeletal system.

They focus on manual treatments like spinal adjustment and other joint and soft tissue manipulation. When a chiropractor does a spinal adjustment, for example, that will increase blood flow and nerve conductivity to the joints and muscles where the patient is experiencing aches and pains. They’ll also provide lifestyle recommendations as well as fitness and nutritional advice. A chiropractor is a personal coach for better living.

Is It good to go to a chiropractor?

The word “chiropractic” means “done by hand.” A lot of people get duped by the online myths about chiropractors. A big one is when they look at YouTube videos showing back cracking during chiropractic treatments. As HealthOne’s Dr. Nobel Malhotra says, that’s just a noise. It’s part of a safe, controlled force applied to a joint to restore proper function and mobility. No bones are being broken.

The bottom line is chiropractors help you stay healthy, whole avoiding surgery and drugs. So what are the signs that it’s time to go see a chiropractor?

signs you should visit a chiropractor

Neck pain

This is an obvious one since most of us spend most of our days hunched over a computer screen. You can attempt better posture, but the pressure on your spine by sitting this way can lead to spine alignment issues.

Headaches

These can be treated naturally when you visit a chiropractor since headaches and migraines can be caused by neck issues.

Limited range of motion

A telltale sign you need to see a chiropractor is if you find your range of motion limited, like bending down to tie your shoes, reaching across your chest to grab the seat belt or restrictions while warming up when at the gym. A chiropractor can implement a series of treatments that will eliminate those issues.

Healing from a recent injury or accident

This is important because if you don’t get proactive with this the injury can become worse and more debilitating as you grow older. It could be issues with the knees, shoulders, ankles, wrists – all can be improved with chiropractic care. Many athletes or people who live active lives benefit enormously from regular visits to the chiropractor.

Treatment for whiplash

This can be more serious, with long-lasting complications, like fatigue, dizziness, tingling or numbness in the arms, blurred vision or difficulty concentrating. Whiplash is a neck injury due to a sudden, forceful back and forth movement of the neck, like in a rear-end car crash.

Stiff muscles

A chiropractor can help with a muscle therapy program, as well, if you’ve pulled a muscle or have some stiffness there.

Chronic back pain

Your posture, being on your feet all day, weight issues – all contribute to back pain. Nobody wants to have to take medication, or even go for surgery in more serious situations. A chiropractic doctor will provide non-invasive pain relief.

Shooting pain in your legs

This could also be a tingling or feeling of weakness in your legs. You might be suffering from a nerve issue, or a slipped disc. Best to consult a chiropractor in this case.

Your shoes wear out unevenly

This is an interesting one. If you notice that the soles of your shoes are wearing out differently, that’s a sign your body is out of alignment. You might need a chiropractic spinal manipulation to re-align the spine to make sure it doesn’t turn into a more chronic, debilitating issue.

Shoulder pain
